1st National Conference on Food Fraud

Conference Background Statement

According to the National Science Foundation (NSF, 2014), Food Fraud is the deliberate substitution, addition, tampering or misrepresentation of food, ingredients or packaging. Food fraud can also be described as food deliberately placed on the market for financial gain with the intention of deceiving the consumer.

Increase in demand for semi processed foods in Ghana has led to the emergence of various types of food products on the Ghanaian market. This consequently has resulted in aggravated levels of deception by people in the food sector for financial gains. A preliminary study using questionnaire and observation by the Food Science Department of KNUST indicated that Food Fraud is a reality in Ghana, hence the need to discuss, research and find means to avert the consequences on human health.

It is against this background that the Department of Food Science and Technology of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in partnership with the Litfahm Consultancy Services is organizing a 1-Day conference on Food Fraud on Wednesday, 27th January 2016; under the theme Combating Food Fraud: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach

The Conference is aimed to sensitize both industry players and consumers about food fraud, discuss among stakeholders the best and pragmatic steps to effectively eradicate food fraud among others. The conference’s specific objectives are:

  • Create awareness and improve food fraud/crime combat
  • Learn what laws are in effect and how to report food crime
  • Prepare a policy communiqué on the approaches Ghana can use to combat food crime

The conference organizers are therefore seeking poster presentations at this First National

Conference on Food Fraud from all stakeholders in the food value chain including researchers, students, policy makers, industry players and medical practitioners in related areas.
