Admission of Candidates into the Graduate Entry Medical Programme (GEMP) for the 2026/2027 Academic Year

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology - School of Medical Sciences (KNUST-SMS) invites applications for the Graduate Entry Medical Programme (GEMP) for the 2026/2027 Academic Year.

1. Overview of the Programme

The Graduate Entry Medical Programme (GEMP) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is designed for individuals with a first degree in biomedical-related fields. The programme aims to provide students with the requisite medical knowledge and skills to become competent medical professionals. The programme is structured in two phases: the pre-clinical component and the clinical component, ensuring that students receive a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of medicine.

  • Pre-Clinical Component: 3 semesters of 16 weeks each.
  • Clinical Component: 3 years of clinical training in various healthcare settings.

Upon completion, graduates will be awarded the MBChB degree, preparing them for roles within both the public and private healthcare sectors in Ghana and beyond.

2. Nature of the programme and Duration

The GEMP is an intensive, full-time programme designed to equip students with the essential medical knowledge and practical skills required to become medical practitioners. The programme consists of:

  • Pre-Clinical Component: This part of the programme includes foundational medical courses in subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, and others. It lasts for three semesters (16 weeks each).
  • Clinical Component: After successfully completing the pre-clinical component, students will enter the clinical phase, which lasts for three years. During this phase, students will gain hands-on experience in hospitals and other clinical settings.

3. Entry Requirements

  • First Degree

Applicants should have a good BSc Degree in the following Biomedical-Related programmes:

Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Dietetics, Food Science and Technology; Herbal Medicine, Midwifery, Medical Laboratory Technology/Science, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physician Assistantship, and Optometry.

In Addition

  • SSSCE/WASSCE Candidates: Candidates should have at least credit passes (A1-C6/A-D respectively) in the following Three (3) Core subjects: English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science plus credit passes (A1-C6/A-D) in relevant Three Elective Science subjects. OR
  • GCE ‘A’ Level Candidates: Candidates should have at least credit passes in Five (5) subjects at the GCE ‘O’ Level (or its equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics plus at least Three (3) credit passes in the relevant Science subjects at the Advanced Level. OR
  • Other Qualifications: International candidates and all others who have any of the above qualifications or their equivalent from an accredited/recognized institution may apply. Applicants from French speaking countries must in addition to the Minimum Requirement provide a minimum of one-year English Proficiency Certificate.
  • Additional Requirements: Candidates must pass an Access Course examination and undergo a selection interview.

4. Important Steps in the Application

To apply for the GEMP programme, follow these steps:

Apply Online

  • Visit the official KNUST Admission application portal via: (HERE!)
  • Complete the online application form by providing the necessary personal, academic, and contact details.
  • Upload all required documents, including academic transcripts, certificates, and a valid identification.

Access Course

  • Shortlisted applicants will be published on the KNUST website.
  • Shortlisted applicants only may apply for the Access Course.
  • Detailed information on the application for the Access Course will be provided alongside the Shortlist of Applicants.

5. Important Dates for GEMP 2026/2027 Academic Year

  • Application Period: 19th January to 27th February 2026
  • Shortlisted Applicants:  9th March 2026
  • Access Course: 27th April –11th May 2026
  • Access Course Examinations: 11th – 14th May 2026
  • Interviews: 18th May 2026

6. Purchase an E-Voucher

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology online application e-vouchers can be obtained by the following options:

Option 1: (Ghanaian and International Applicants)

  • Visit the KNUST Admission Application Portal (HERE!)
  • Register with a valid email address.
  • Login and purchase a voucher via Mastercard, Visa or Mobile Money.
  • Proceed with application

Option 2: (Ghanaian Applicants only)

  • From a mobile device, type *415*55#
  • Follow the prompts to purchase a voucher via Mobile Money
  • Visit the KNUST Admission Application Portal (HERE!)
  • Register with a valid email address
  • Login, validate the purchased voucher, and proceed with application.

Option 3: (Ghanaian Applicants only)

  • Purchase a voucher from the Regional or other designated Offices of Ghana Post Company Limited
  • Visit the KNUST Admission Application Portal (HERE!)
  • Register with a valid email address
  • Login, validate the purchased voucher, and proceed with application.

7. Application Processing Fee

  • Ghanaian Applicants: GH¢250.00
  • International Applicants: US$100.00 or GH¢1,550.00
