Recruitment of Research Fellow - Statistician

The Bureau of Integrated Rural Development (BIRD), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi-Ghana invites application for the position of a Research Fellow in the field of Statistics. The post holder will be engaged by KNUST but will be based at BIRD and will contribute to development of research and grants proposals, teaching and consultancy services. The research fellow will also contribute to his/her own research activities and support a programme of research including collaborating and publishing with other team members, and undertake other tasks as directed by the Director of BIRD. BIRD values demonstrated excellence in research in a highly competitive environment. We seek an individual who is prepared to contribute to rigorous research - primarily in rural development issues utilising applied tools from the field of statistics. The ideal candidate will have proven experience in conceptualising, developing and implementing research projects/ programmes, with field research experience in Ghana and/or developing countries. S/he will have a record of high-quality research outputs and experience in communicating research to diverse audiences.

Qualifications

  1. Minimum of a PhD in Statistics, Biostatistics or Data Science with strong quantitative research expertise and experience in research and a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience. Strong knowledge of advanced statistical techniques and concepts, such as, but not limited to, properties of distributions, hypothesis testing, parametric/non-parametric tests, survey design/analysis, sampling theory/methodology,
  2. Advanced knowledge in statistics or data science applications, such as Bayesian hierarchical models or data fusion techniques.
  3. Demonstrated experience in collecting, analysing, and interpreting large scale data sets using a range of methodologies.
  4. Demonstrated experience in experimental/quasi-experimental study design and analysis including structural equation modelling, propensity score matching, regression discontinuity, difference- in-difference, regression/predictive modelling, and proper usage of correct statistics.
  5. Experience in leading and developing a programme of research including ability to undertake survey operations design, survey implementation and survey rollout.
  6. Ability to organise, undertake and analyse microdata, large surveys, create visualizations and write high quality reports and communication products to disseminate large survey findings.
  7. Previous experience in grant and general proposal writing.
  8. Previous experience in designing and conducting large household surveys and utilisation of statistical models to analyse data
  9. Advanced Knowledge of a variety of machine learning techniques (clustering, classification, regression, decision trees and etc.) and their real-world advantages/drawbacks.
  10. Ability to use computational statistical software tools such as SPSS (syntax), R, Stata, Python and/or SAS programming language.
  11. Ability to utilize mapping and data visualization software to bring data to life
  12. Proficient in SQL and working with large-scale databases
  13. A strong publication track record including both scientific and policy papers in reputable journals
  14. Ability to carry out independent quantitative research including strong writing and IT skills
  15. Ability to manage open academic research and associated activities and to contribute to ideas for new research projects and research income generation
  16. Ability to innovate and work effectively with scientists and research institutions on a global scale

The Bureau of Integrated Rural Development (BIRD) is one of the four research centres of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi.
