Admission of Candidates to Research or Higher Degree Programmes at the Department of Petroleum Engineering

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission to the underlisted Full-Time higher degree programmes:

  • MSc. Petroleum Engineering (1 Year)
  • MSc. Petroleum Geoscience (1 Year)
  • MPhil. Petroleum Engineering (2 Years)
  • MPhil. Petroleum Geoscience (2 Years)
  • PhD. Petroleum Engineering (4 Years)

Admission Requirements

  1. MSc/MPhil Petroleum Engineering and MSc/MPhil Petroleum Geoscience

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Upper Division)) or its equivalent from a recognized University in Engineering, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, or any field of specialization relevant to the oil and gas sector. Applicants with qualifications other than those specified above shall be interviewed and if found necessary, will be required to take a written examination before admission. Preference would be given to candidates with relevant office or field experience in oil and gas.

  1. PhD. Petroleum Engineering

Candidates must have a Master’s degree in any Engineering discipline from KNUST or any other recognised institution. Candidates with an MSc/MPhil degree in Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics must have a Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Upper Division)) from a recognized institution. Students in the MPhil Petroleum Engineering Programme who achieve a CWA of 70 and above at the end of the first year of the programme and can demonstrate the ability to exercise independent critical thinking, can apply for upgrade into the PhD programme. All candidates shall pass an interview conducted by the Department of Petroleum Engineering. Based on recommendations from the interview panel, some category of successful applicants may be required to audit relevant courses at the master’s level as prescribed by the Departmental Board.

Sale of E-Vouchers for admission is in progress.

Prospective applicants should purchase an e-Voucher containing Login ID/Serial Number and PIN for GHȼ280.00 at the following banks: GCB Bank, Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG) or Ecobank or dial *447*160# on any network and follow the prompts.

Candidates should then proceed to the online admissions portal: (HERE!) and begin the application process.

Once the process is completed, candidates MUST PRINT OUT TWO (2) COPIES of the completed application form from the portal and submit them (by post) to the School of Graduate Studies together with all relevant documents (Photocopies of Certificates, two (2) Recommendation Letters/ Confidential Reports, Statement of Purpose, and [Transcript for those whose qualification used for the application was not obtained from KNUST]) to the following address:

Any hand delivered application shall not be processed. Deadline for sale of forms and completion of online application is 31st October 2022.

Application forms submitted after the deadline shall not be processed. Only candidates who successfully gain admission shall be notified subsequently.

NB: All Candidates from non-Anglophone countries must have an internationally recognised Certificate of Proficiency in the English Language (TOEFL or British Council, IELTS) with above average score or be available to attend a three (3) months English language course at the KNUST-Department of English.
