A six-member team led by Caroline Clark from Vision Aid Overseas (VAO), a British Optometry Charity Organisation paid a courtesy call on the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Peter Donkor.
In a briefing, Dr Angela O. Amedo - Head, Department of Optometry and Visual Science who accompanied the team informed the Pro Vice-Chancellor of how Vision Aid Overseas had helped the Department of Optometry over the years. According to Dr. Amedo and Caroline Clark, the relationship between the Department and Vision Aid Overseas stalled for about eight years and said they were happy that the friendship had been reignited with the visit of the six-member team of volunteers.
The Pro Vice-Chancellor was further informed that, Vision Aid Overseas had been doing a lot of direct teaching and community services in Ghana over the years and this time around, the team is here to do a one-week direct teaching for final year students at the Department of Optometry and Visual Science and to also engage in community service at Donkokrom in the Afram Plains area.
In a welcome address, the Pro Vice-Chancellor warmly welcomed the team of volunteers to the University on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor and thanked the organisation sincerely for their continued support in direct teaching and community service for the people of Ghana. He informed the team of the University's preparedness to take the relationship further with the signing of a formal agreement and invited the Department and the team to explore the possibility.
Professor Peter Donkor further invited the team to also make a critical assessment of the Optometry programme being run by the University and make their observations and comments known to the Univeristy in an attempt to enhance the programme's richness and content.
The team was made up of Chris Roberts, Tony Solomon, Karen Tytler, Amandeer Josan, Dnarshana Chauh and Mr Abraham Adusei, a staff of the Vice-Chancellor's Office.
