The donation forms part of the Vice-Chancellor’s Initiative dubbed “Community Impact Project” (CIP) and activities to mark the 7th Biennial Congress of the KNUST Alumni Association. The beneficiary schools are Nana Kwaku Boateng School, Sarkodee Basic School and Presbyterian Basic Schools.
The donation was made possible through the benevolence of Airtel Ghana Limited, Afram Publications, Unilever, Nestle Ghana Limited, EPP Books, Fio Enterprise and Kingdom Books and Stationery Limited.
Professor Mrs. Owusu Daaku, Chairman of the CIP noted that the University in executing its core mandate needed to make its presence felt in the communities. It was in this light therefore that the “Community Impact Programme” was initiated by the Vice-Chancellor. She said though the University was rich intellectually, it was not so well-resourced financially. Therefore the University sought the assistance of corporate bodies to help and she was grateful that they did generously.
Professor William Otoo Ellis, the Vice-Chancellor, expressed his appreciation to corporate institutions that came to the aid of the University to help the deprived schools. He noted that since the inception of the Community Impact Programme two years ago, a mechanised borehole valued at 7,000 Ghana Cedis had been constructed at Owuobuoho near Asante Mampong. Other projects have been undertaken at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. Under the CIP, the University organised a training programme for the chiefs of the 21 communities bordering the University on the Chieftaincy Act.
In a related development, the Vice-Chancellor made a presentation to Pope John’s Senior High School. The occasion was also used to launch the 55th Anniversary Celebration of the School.
Mr. Nsiah Appau popularly known in showbiz as Okyeame Kwame and his wife Annica Nsiah Appau who are also alumni of KNUST were there to grace the occasion. Okyeame Kwame treated the gathering to some songs from his current album.
