The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST) has held its annual Convocation Fun Games at the Paa Joe Stadium, bringing together staff in a lively celebration of unity, wellness and teamwork as part of this year’s May Day activities.
The event drew staff from various colleges and offices, reinforcing the university’s commitment to promoting work-life balance, staff welfare and a strong sense of community.

Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. David Asamoah highlighted the importance of staff health and well-being, referencing the health walk organised earlier in the day as part of the celebrations.
“Walking, as a simple yet powerful form of exercise, offers numerous benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, stress reduction, enhanced mental well-being and opportunity for social interaction,” he said.
He praised KNUST staff for their excellence in service, scholarship and leadership, stressing that their commitment continues to strengthen the university’s reputation both locally and globally.
“At KNUST, our senior members exemplify excellence through service, scholarship, leadership and innovation,” he said.
“Your unwavering commitment to teaching, research, administration and community engagement continues to uphold the university’s distinguished reputation, both nationally and internationally.”
A representative of the Convocation Chair, Dr. Kwame Mireku, welcomed staff and encouraged networking and friendly competition.
“It is all about unity, networking, and wellness. After a hectic semester and examinations, today gives us the chance to relax, connect and compete,” he said.
He also called for fair competition, noting the friendly rivalry between the Ghana Association of University Administrators and the University Teachers Association of Ghana.
“We know most of the competition will be between GAUA and UTAG; let everything be done in the spirit of fairness and unity,” he said.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson praised staff for their energy, unity and commitment following a successful celebration.
“I was surprised and never knew my professors could play football like this, from registrars to finance officers, GAUA to UTAG, everyone showed up.
“Incredibly, we can spend almost the whole day just having fun,” she said.
In the various events, GAUA secured wins in both men’s 100-metre races, the ball-in-basket race (men), the women’s 50 metres, lime and spoon, the 4x100 relay, ampe and women’s table tennis, while UTAG claimed victories in tug of war and football.

GAUA emerged as overall winners, securing 23 points to top the standings. Medals were presented across all categories, celebrating the spirit of fun, fitness and community that defined the event.

Chair of the Convocation, Prof. Hannah Vivian Osei, donated bags of sachet water to the Sports Directorate to support this year's GUSSA Games.
