A distinguished alumnus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST), Prof. Bernard Kumi-Boateng, has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, effective August 1, 2026.
Prof. Kumi-Boateng, a Professor of Geomatic Engineering, is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Geosciences and Environmental Studies and a Licensed Surveyor.
His academic foundation was shaped at KNUST, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Geomatic Engineering and a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Geomatic Engineering.
He later earned an additional MSc from the International Institute for Geo-information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), Netherlands, and completed a PhD in Geomatic Engineering at UMaT in a record two years. He also holds a Professional Doctorate in Project Management, alongside certificates in Theology, Pastoral Studies, Counselling and Family Therapy from Pentecost University.
His research and consultancy interests span Resettlement Action Planning, Rapid Asset Survey (RAS), Full Built Asset Survey (FBAS), Environmental Management, Compensation and Cadastral Surveying, Drone Surveys, Socio-economic Baseline and Impact Assessment, Land Access, Sustainable Community Development, Urban Mining (E-waste), and Informal E-waste Stakeholder Engagement.
Prof. Kumi-Boateng is a member of several professional bodies, including the International Association of Engineers (IAENG), Canadian Institute of Geomatics (CIG), African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE), American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS), Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE), Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS), and the Ghana Geospatial Society (GGS).
He is also a Fellow of the West African Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (WAIMM) and a Distinguished Fellow of the Institute of Project Management Professionals (IPMP), Ghana.
Within academia, he has held several leadership roles, including Dean of Planning and Quality Assurance, Dean of Students, University Chaplain, Vice Dean of Students, Vice Dean of International Programmes, and Head of three departments, Geomatic Engineering, Mathematical Sciences, and Computer Science and Engineering.
