A midwifery student of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Mabel Taylor, has been honoured by the Chief of Enchi Kwahu in the Aowin Municipality of the Western North Region for exceptional service, compassion and commitment to patient care.
Ms Taylor, who is undertaking her midwifery training at KNUST and currently serves at the Enchi Kwahu Methodist Clinic, received the recognition from Nana Tano Kabaah II after an act of selflessness that helped save the life of a pregnant woman in critical condition.
According to community leaders, the woman had delayed seeking medical attention because of financial constraints and arrived at the clinic in a fragile state.
Recognising the urgency, Ms Taylor went beyond her routine responsibilities, mobilising financial support from prominent members of the community, including the chief, to ensure the patient received immediate care.
When the woman was later referred to the Enchi Government Hospital for delivery, Ms Taylor personally accompanied her to guarantee continuity of care. The patient subsequently delivered safely.
Moved by the young midwife’s professionalism and sacrifice, Nana Tano Kabaah II presented her with a refrigerator as a token of appreciation, describing her conduct as exemplary and worthy of emulation within the health profession.
Speaking in an interview, Ms Taylor said her actions were guided by advice she received during her training, which emphasised treating all patients equally, regardless of their financial situation.
“Some patients may not have money, but that should not stop us from giving them the best care. Sometimes, we must sacrifice what we have to save lives,” she said.
She encouraged her colleagues and fellow trainees in the health sector to uphold professionalism, humility and compassion in serving their communities.
In further recognition of her dedication, Ms Taylor was adjudged the Overall Best Nurse and Midwife for 2025. Residents of Enchi Kwahu have praised her kindness, humility and work ethic, describing her as a role model and an inspiration to young health professionals.
Ms Taylor is a third-year Midwifery student of KNUST, where she is receiving professional training in maternal and child healthcare.
