The Student Representative Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST-SRC) has donated 50 brand new HP laptop computers to brilliant but needy students in KNUST. The presentation was held on Wednesday, 4th August 2021 at the Allotey Auditorium, College of Science.

The donation forms part of the activities to climax the SRC 60th Anniversary Celebration and in fulfilment of SRC’s pledge to support the Vice-Chancellor’s initiative to Support One Needy Student with One Laptop (SONSOL Project).

The SRC President, Mr. Samuel Sesah in his address recalled that with the advent of COVID-19, students found it difficult adjusting to the current trend of learning. He commended the Vice-Chancellor, Professor (Mrs) Rita Akosua Dickson, philanthropists, and key stakeholders for actualising the initiative which would improve E- learning and teaching.

Mr. Sesah indicated that as part of plans to sustain the SONSOL Project, the KNUST-SRC Parliament is poised in ensuring that an arrangement is made to reserve a percentage of the annual SRC dues to be used as funds to support the project. He expressed gratitude to all donors who have contributed to the realisation of the vision and encouraged other stakeholders and philanthropists to also invest into the future of students in KNUST.

The Head of Quality Assurance and Planning Unit (QAPU), Professor Jerry John Kponyo, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, lauded the SRC for supporting the initiative to assist brilliant but needy students with the laptops to enhance their academic performances. He hoped that future SRC administrations would also incorporate the goodwill and offer support to more needy students. He, thus, encouraged the SRC to institutionalise the gesture so that it would form part of their corporate social responsibility.

He urged the beneficiaries to remember the efforts of the donors by keeping the laptops in good shape and utilize them for their intended purpose.

Mrs. Theodora Oduro, Senior Assistant Registrar at Student Affairs and Financial Services under the Office of the Dean of Students revealed that the selection of the beneficiaries was based on the data provided by the QAPU. She expressed much gratitude to the student leadership for their support.

Mrs. Oduro appealed to the beneficiaries to ensure that they use the laptops for their academic works and keep them in good shape.
