Dr. Anthony Adjei Tetteh-Opai, the Sports Drectorate, together with the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Art and the Head of the Department of Industrial Art, have unveiled a monument in honour and in memory of the first director of sports of the Kumasi College of Technology (KCT) now Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the late Arthur Hercules Ratnadurai Joseph, popularly knowns as Paa Joe. The unveiling was done at the University Stadium popularly known as the Paa Joe Stadium which was named after the late Arthur H. R. Joseph.
According to the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Art, Dr. Ebenezer Kofi Howard, said the decision to mount a monument in Paa Joe’s honour was in recognition of his selfless service to Ghana in the fields of sports and education. He further presented the monument to the Sports Directorate on behalf of the Department.
Dr. Charles Frimpong, Head of the Department, revealed that, the monument was through the efforts of a group of six (6) final year students from the Metal Product Design Section of the Department, as the sculptors who mounted it as part of their project. He added that, the monument supervised by Mr. Cyril Etornam Adala and assisted by Mr. Ofori Asare Amankwa has a touch of the Olympics symbol to make it more universal.
Dr. Anthony Tetteh-Opai showed his gratitude on behalf of the Management of the University and to the Department and said he was impressed with the work done. He stated that, they would make sure the surrounding of the monument is always clean and promised to do his best to support other works from the Department.
The supervisor of the project took the opportunity to thank Management of the Faculty for allowing them put up the monument. He also thanked the Sports Directorate and added that he was glad the students were given the opportunity to showcase what they learnt in school.
