It was an afternoon to remember as the first years of KNUST gathered in the Great hall to rehearse for their matriculations, which was due in less than 48 hours. Anxious looking "freshers" from various departments gradually arrived and seized the seats in the Great hall awaiting instructions. As others quietly observed, others had a good time conversing with friends about all the latest news of the week. It was a stimulating moment to be part of the prime Science and Technology University in Ghana. One by one the room gradually filled up with "freshers" from various faculties of the campus. Finally attention is focused as instructions concerning the order of service was being given. This included seating arrangements and bodily response orders to be followed as the Vice Chancellor ushers them into their respective colleges on that day.
Then came the most exciting moment, the traditional "Gaudeamus" song! This is an ancient characteristic of KNUST Matriculation. This is the song that all first years learn and sing during matriculations. They were taught how to sing the Latin song. It was a struggle at first as the words to this song was in Latin and not English. Gradually, they picked up the tune and did marvelously well. The words were also typed on sheets to aid pronunciation and organization. After a series of rehearsals, the piano accompaniment was introduced, making the atmosphere livelier. The first years cheered with excitement as the last line of the final stanza to the piano-enhanced song was completed. Two of the first years who were interviewed, Betty (Bsc Biochemistry I) and Nana Obeng (Bsc Agriculture I) said they were so happy to be part of the KNUST family and they had high expectations for the long awaited matriculation. Matriculation however is scheduled for Saturday October 09 2010.
