The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has held matriculation ceremony for its newly admitted students of the Faculty of Forest Resources Technology in Sunyani.
In an address, the Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Professor William Otoo Ellis told the freshmen that "Matriculation" is the ceremony that formally admits them as junior members of the University as they take the Matriculation Oath to abide by the rules of the University. He further congratulated the freshmen for making the mark to be worthy of admission into the University.
The Vice-Chancellor informed the new students that, the former School of Forestry in Sunyani was upgraded to a Diploma awarding institution in 1999. The School of Forestry became an affiliate to the Institute of Renewable Natural Resources of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and which was later renamed the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, following the restructuring into the collegiate system.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor W. O. Ellis further stated that, currently, the School of Forestry is the only institution in the country for the training of middle level manpower for the forestry sector. He said, this year the Faculty of Forest Resources Technology admitted 97 students, 71 males and 26 females bringing the total number of students at the Faculty of Forest Resources Technology, Sunyani to almost 400. The Institute of Distance Learning also presented 150 first year Post Graduate students for the matriculation.
The Vice-Chancellor advised the freshmen to commence their studies with all enthusiasm to acquire the needed skills, knowledge and attitude to solve the many problems confronting the Agricultural sector. He further stated that, the University authorities were in discussions with the Estate Office to take a critical look at how best the University could renovate an old building which had been earmarked for use as a new Library for the Suyani campus. He said, "This will stem the problem of congestion at the old Library". He also emphasised that, the University was seriously considering the restructuring of the three-year Diploma programme run by the KNUST Suyani campus.
The ceremony was graced with the presence of a number of chiefs from the Fiapre Traditional area.
