In a bid to deepen the existing relationship between the KNUST and its key strategic partners, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor William O. Ellis, has paid a courtesy call on the Chief Executive Officers of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ashanti West, Adum, Kumasi.
In a statement, Professor Ellis noted that, the KNUST would undertake joint community-based impact programmes with its strategic partners in some selected communities. This, he added will among other things bridge the gap between the University and industry; and bring the city closer to the University.
Professor Ellis observed that, although the communities around the University are expanding rapidly, yet the University is left out in terms of development projects. He noted that a KNUST City Campus would be established in the Kumasi metropolis to provide opportunity for candidates who could not gain access to the University to pursue certificate, Diploma and professional programmes.
In a response, the Chief Executive Officer of KMA, Mr. Samuel Sarpong, was full of praise for the courtesy call, and welcomed the move to deepen collaboration with the KNUST. He underscored the importance of the existing Memorandum of Understanding between the KMA and KNUST to be reviewed.
On his part, the Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Professor Ohene Adjei, recommended that the MOU signed between the KNUST and KATH should be subjected to renewal. He indicated that, it was imperative for the KATH to sustain the provision of quality training to medical students from KNUST as part of the mutual agreement in the MOU. However, the MOU is expected to be revitalized and upgraded to meet some developments and changes made.
The Vice-Chancellor welcomed the move for the reveiw of the existing MOU. He described the relationship between KNUST and KATH as inseparable and expressed hope that the inter-relationship would be taken to another level.
The Regional Director of Electricity Company of Ghana - Ashanti West, Mr. Jones Ofori-Addo, expressed regret about poor education on electricity and energy conservation in the University and its environs. He also expressed dissatisfaction about some private hostels and other consumers who engage in unauthorized activities, while others tamper with electric metres and cables.
Professor Ellis gave the assurance that the Management of KNUST would collaborate with the ECG to clamp down the operations of defaulters and other illegal activities in the University community to forestall any imminent disaster.
The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied by a delegation comprising Mr. Kobby Yebo-Okrah, Registrar; Mr. M. K. Okrah, Senior Assistant Registrar at the Vice-Chancellor's Office and Mr. Solomon Panford, the University Relations Officer.
