To encourage Cross border relationships, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Wellspring University, Nigeria. The MOU, among other things is to afford both parties the opportunity to mutually benefit from staff and Students exchanges, programmes and research.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor William Otoo Ellis, gave a background of KNUST. He said KNUST is the number one University in Ghana and a leader in delivering quality science and technology education. KNUST since its sixty (60) years of existence, has trained high caliber manpower for Ghana and Africa as a whole.
He stated that KNUST helped in establishing the University of Mines and Technology, UMAT, in Tarkwa. Again, it has fourteen private Ghanaian universities that are affiliates.
Professor Ellis noted that as a modern University there was the need for external exposure and collaboration that was why after a careful consideration of the proposal by Wellspring University and follow up visits KNUST was agreeing to the partnership.
He stated that knowing KNUST's enviable position and its standard, quality assurance was very critical therefore challenged the Wellspring University delegation to watch against any actions that would tarnish the image of KNUST. He however assured them that KNUST cherishes the new partnership between the two institutions and pledged the University's assistance and support.
The Vice-Chancellor of Wellspring University, Professor J.E.A. Osemeikhian said the signing of the MOU with KNUST was a historic one. This was because KNUST was a pacesetter in University education in Ghana and Africa as a whole.
He also praised the KNUST delegation that visited Wellspring University and was grateful that their request for collaboration had finally been granted.
He assured the Vice-Chancellor that his outfit would not do anything to taint the image of KNUST. He continued that they would strive to maintain the strict adherence to the terms of the MOU.
Professor Osemeikhian noted that the National Universities Commission which supervises university education in Nigeria had already included the relationship between the two universities in its pilot programme for Cross Border-Education.
The Wellspring University is a young Christian private, University licensed less than two years ago in Benin City, Nigeria.
