The Modern Languages Department of KNUST, under the auspices of the French Embassy, has held the third (3rd) Ghana Inter-university seminar for Doctorial studies in Literature at Noda Hotel, Kumasi, under the theme: “Literature: Vehicle of Communication and knowledge in the 21st century”.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor William Otoo Ellis, in his address expressed his delight by saying such a collaborative effort showed the importance of Literature in the promotion of education and knowledge, and further hoped the seminar would help to explore new avenues in literary writing and, combined with technology, help to push forward the boundaries of knowledge in our cultural activities and move into the realm of conflict resolution.
He pledged that, the University would continue to support Inter-University Collaborative initiatives of this kind to make literary study more relevant to humanity.
Professor J. Ohene-Manu, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, addressing the delegates touched on the need to explore new frontiers and avenues in Literature for the purposes of promoting global interaction, advancing knowledge, and technological development.
Monsieur Arnaud Darnon, Head of Co-operation and Cultural Affairs (French Embassy), representing the French Ambassador, reaffirmed the French government’s continued support for research and higher education in Ghana. He also revealed that he was working on a similar collaborative initiative (with a regional dimension for the West African sub-region) in the area of Mathematics in partnership with the University of Strasbourg.
Vice-Chancellors of Sister Universities; University of Cape coast (UCC), University of Ghana,(Legon), University of Education, Wineba (UEW) , in speeches read on their behalf expressed their solidarity and commitment towards the advent of the Doctoral Studies in Literature in Ghana and called for maximum cooperation between participating institutions to equip them to translate Literature into a true vehicle of communication and knowledge.
In attendance were the Linguistic Attaché, Mme Isabelle Bokhari, French Embassy, the Visiting Professor, Professor Fonkoua from Strasbourg University, France, Doctoral Students, Senior Members from KNUST and representatives of other sister institutions.
