Professor William Otoo Ellis, the Vice-Chancellor, has announced plans by KNUST to run programmes for the military. He revealed that these programmes would be aimed at equipping Personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces with relevant skills in order to make them useful in other areas of the economy after leaving the army.
Professor Ellis, made this known when Brigadier General Richard Kwame Opoku-Adusei, the newly appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC), of the Northern Sector of the Ghana Armed Forces paid a courtesy call on him. The Visit forms part of his familiarization tour on his assumption of office as the new General Officer Commanding.
He noted that the course when commenced, would help military men who retire, as well as those who leave the service in their youthful years, to engage in other income generating activities. The Vice-Chancellor stated that it was his passion that the University partners the military to run short courses and other programmes and that discussions are ongoing in that regard.
The Vice-Chancellor, congratulated the new General Officer Commanding (GOC) on his appointment. He noted that over the years, KNUST has had a good relationship with the securities especially, the Ghana Armed Forces. This was because the Fourth Battalion of Infantry,(4BN), has supported KNUST in diverse ways including the training of University Security Services and helping in other security related areas.
He noted that the University also had a good relationship with the Ghana Air Force which was also a partner to KNUST in running the aerospace engineering programme and hoped the relationship would be strengthened, and proposed the possible absorption of KNUST's graduates into the military.
For his part, Brigadier General Richard Kwame Opoku-Adusei praised the Vice-Chancellor for maintaining the cordial relationship that existed between the two institutions.
Brigadier Opoku-Adusei noted that there are new opportunities in the military for serving personnel, it was therefore important for them to develop in order to increase the human skills base of the force. He emphasized that the future is bright for young people and therefore encouraged military personnel to take advantage of the Distance Learning Programmes and other options of the University to upgrade themselves in order to contribute to the development of the nation. He however called for both parties to strategise towards the realization of the development cause.
Professor Otoo Ellis, added that, with the ever increasing number of students and a staff of over four thousand (4,000), the surrounding communities as well as people who operate businesses in the University, the KNUST Police Station alone cannot handle the University's security needs. He therefore appealed to the GOC, to dispatch some of his staff to patrol the campus especially with the arrival of freshmen and women to beef up security on campus.
