THE COUNCIL of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, in keeping with international norms and practices, has made a landmark decision to immortalize the names and contributions of the Founders of the University. The Council recognizes with gratitude the decision of the Government and People of Ghana to rename the University after its Founder, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, by an Act of Parliament, Act 559, 1998. At its 211th Meeting held on October 01, 2010, the Council resolved to honour Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and Otumfuo Osei Agyemang Prempeh II, the Founders of the University. In making the decision, Council acknowledged with pride the vision, determination and the steely courage of Osagyefo and Otumfuo, against seemingly unsurmountable odds, to promote science and technology education in particular, and higher education in general.
For the Council and the University, the founding, the naming and the mandate of the University as a Center of excellence for science and technology education and training, altogether, is a living and eternal testimony and manifestation of the vision and contribution of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to Ghana’s science and technology development. The Council, therefore, praised the initiatives of the University Administration in recognizing Dr. Nkrumah through the creation of the Osagyefo Statue, Gardens and Gateway that adorn the Main Entrance to the University.
In furtherance of this cause, the Council has mandated the University Administration to set in motion the necessary processes for the institution of appropriate honours, including the following, to immortalize its Founders:
• Founders’ Day (to be observed on the LAST FRIDAY of every NOVEMBER) The Day would enable the University to open its doors to the general public. Additionally, a Special Congregation of the University would be held on that day to recognize, acknowledge and confer Honorary Degrees and other Awards on deserving personalities, benefactors and institutions who have contributed in diverse ways to national/international development, the University and Higher Education, in general;
• Dr. Kwame Nkrumah Museum (The University Museum would be named after Dr. Kwame Nkrumah with Special Collections and Holdings reflecting the life and works of Dr. Nkrumah);
• Otumfuo Osei Agyemang Prempeh II Library (The University Library would be named after Otumfuo Osei Agyemang Prempeh II with Special Collections of the life and works of Otumfuo);
• Dr. Kwame Nkrumah Chair for Pan Africanism and Regional Integration; and, Otumfuo Osei Agyemang Prempeh II Chair for Chieftaincy and Heritage Studies to be hosted by the College of Art and Social Sciences of the University.
To this end, the Council of the University hereby solicits the support and contributions of the Government and People of Ghana, Civil Society, Donor and Corporate Institutions, Asanteman Council, Nkrumahists, Pan Africanists, African Diasporans, Benefactors, Alumni, Philantropists and Individuals for financial and other support to promote the life and works of the Founders of the University.
The Council, in furtherance of its commitment to the cause of national integration and development, has also approved in principle for the University to host Ghana’s first Presidential Library and Museum. The Center would be wholly funded by the Kufuor Foundation, a non-governmental and not-for-profit international organization. The Center, when completed, would have Resident Fellows and host International Seminars, Conferences and Workshops. Apart from placing its facilities at the disposal of the University, the Center would also collaborate with the University and counterpart institutions to conduct Research in the areas of Institutional Governance, Policy Planning and Integrated Rural Development.
