The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Chapter of the Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (WiSTEM) Ghana has held a Career Progression Workshop for its members on 13th July, 2021 at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Conference Room.
The programme brought together seventy (70) women in STEM to deliberate on the role WiSTEM plays and chart a path for career progression for female scientists.
Professors (Mrs.) Atinuke Olusola Adebanji, Faculty of Physical and Computational Sciences and (Mrs.) Ibok Nsa Oduro, Department of Food Science and Technology facilitated the workshop.
Professor (Mrs.) Adebanji in her presentation encouraged members to create opportunities for themselves and others as they climb the career ladder.
She urged them to leverage on the experience they have acquired over the years to pursue higher education in their respective fields.
Professor Adebanji again charged the women to take up online seminars to build their knowledge and skills.
Professor (Mrs.) Ibok Oduro took participants through KNUST Corporate Strategic Plan and encouraged them to build good brands for themselves by engaging in mentorship programmes.
Professor Oduro advised them to be purpose-driven and be abreast with activities happening in other faculties, departments and units within the University.
She further charged them to take advantage to read on the requirements leading to promotions and based on their qualifications apply for higher career opportunities in the University.
In a related development, Head of KNUST Counselling Centre (KCC), Mrs. Victoria De-Graft Adjei led the team to launch a twenty-seven (27) paged document, a constitution for the KNUST Chapter.
The Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Ghana (WiSTEM) Ghana was launched in 2018 at KNUST to inspire younger females to take up STEM careers and it is expected that they would set the roadmap to increase female enrolment in science and technology subjects, facilitate scientific and technological and leadership capabilities of women, provide a framework for intra, and inter institutional collaboration and promote a science and technology culture in the society.
