In a bid to remain competitive and provide quality services to the University community and its environs in a timely manner, the Management Committee of the University Press, UPK, has embarked on a massive refurbishment of the print house. A set of newly procured machines were also inaugurated. The cost of procuring the printing machines is estimated at GH¢350,000 and was funded through the UPK’s own resources.
At the inauguration and commissioning ceremony, the Chairman of the University Press Management Committee, Prof. D. A. Ohene Adu stated that, the ceremony marked the first phase in the process of rebranding itself for a greater output. He however presented the major challenges facing the unit which included inadequate number of staff and lack of steady promotion of its members.
He therefore called on the appropriate authorities of the University to address their needs adequately. He also assured the various units in the University of their preparedness to provide quality service at affordable costs with prompt delivery.
The Manager of UPK, Mr. Michael Afrifa Darko, reiterated that, the exercise had given the press house, a business-like look, enough confidence and credibility to attract business-minded individuals and organisations to transact business with the Press. He enumerated the printing machines to include: Image Setter, Two colour MOZP’s printing machines, MO printing machine, a guillotine and a stitching machine. He said, “Since the inception of the Printing Press, it has not undergone any major transformation, therefore, the new machines have come in to augment the old ones to strategically take care of the services of our numerous clients”.
He added that, with the fate of UPK now, the press would easily provide quality and prompt services to the University Community and beyond. He hoped educational institutions especially, the tertiary ones and other establishments in the northern sector of the country would access the new facilities to their advantage.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. K. K. Adarkwa who was the special guest of honour for the historic event was full of praise for the management Committee for their achievement. He added that, in an era where business has become very competitive, it was appropriate that, UPK refurbished its outfit to improve upon their already attained fame.
Prof. Adarkwa assured the management that, his office would enforce the Financial and Stores Regulations to ensure that all printing works emanating from the University are done at the Press. He however, charged them to rightfully devise means of claiming their debts so that the outfit would be financially sound to carry on with their business.
