Following proposals for the establishment of a branch of the Ghana Law School at the Faculty of Law, KNUST, a three-member delegation led by her Ladyship Justice Sophia Akuffo (Ghana Supreme Court Judge) has visited the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kwasi Kwafo Adarkwa to discuss matters relating to the establishment.
In her address, Mrs. Akuffo said, a committee was set up last year to investigate into problems facing the Law School from year to year and come up with solutions. The committee therefore suggested that, additional Law schools should be set up for professional training of lawyers which would satisfy the obvious needs and facilitate the functions of the General Legal Council of Ghana.
KNUST and University of Ghana (Legon) were considered for the establishment of branches of the Ghana Law School. She added that, the schools would not be autonomous but would be additional centres of the Ghana school of Law and would not be left as orphan institutions. However, they would require the use of the University’s facilities.
The Vice Chancellor Prof. Adarkwa commended their initiative and elaborated on the plans the University has put in place for the opening. He said that, the centre is regarded by the University as an extension of the Faculty of Law, therefore, well-furnished large offices have been provided whilst additional library space and books for the programme would be provided.
He added that the University has also allocated a site for the construction of additional structures to accommodate the demands of the Law School. He also commented on the Chancellor’s keen interest in the establishment of a KNUST branch of the Ghana School of Law.
In an interview, her Ladyship, Justice Sophia Akuffo said that, the school would be in place next academic year. She therefore urged prospective students to work hard whiles maintaining their integrity, tighten up issues of discipline and standards of moralities and ethics because there is “no shortcut” for the legal profession.
Present were Prof. W.O. Ellis, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Daniel Buor, Provost of the College of Art and Social Sciences (CASS), Prof. Stephen Offei, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Rev. Oppong, Director of works, Justice George A. Sarpong, Director of Ghana School of Law and Justice Marietta Brew Appiah-Opong of Luther Brew Company.
