Student health and well-being have always been a priority at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi. In line with this commitment, the Directorate of Student Affairs (DoSA) launched the Hygiene Essential Bank (HEB) initiative to provide students with essential hygiene products to support their health and wellness.
In its first phase, 100 students, including 50 males and 50 females, benefited from the initiative, receiving essential items such as sanitary pads, toothbrushes, toothpaste, washing powder, shaving sticks, and deodorant. For many beneficiaries, this initiative is a lifeline that helps them maintain proper hygiene without added financial strain.
Abigail Addo, a 4th-year BSc. Textile Design and Technology student, expressed that the donation is a significant relief, particularly given the rising cost of sanitary products.
"It is going to help me save money for other things like my final project work, and it will sustain me for a while because buying sanitary pads is costly nowadays, so I am very happy," she said.
Regina Kowofie, a 4th-year Textile Design and Technology student, applauded the initiative and emphasized the need for its continuity.
"It is a very great initiative that DoSA and KNUST have brought on board, and I would like to suggest that it should not be something that is done periodically but should go on every semester," she expressed.
Emmanuel Opare, a 4th-year Agriculture student, also shared his thoughts on the impact of the initiative.
"I think this initiative will be a very good benefit to me since it will boost my confidence level when I go into public and also help me keep myself neat," he said.
With the introduction of the Hygiene Essential Bank, KNUST continues to demonstrate its dedication to student welfare. This initiative proves that small but meaningful interventions can have a lasting impact on health, dignity, and academic success.
