The Student Representative Council (SRC) of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi exhibited commendable leadership by presenting a Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-Up vehicle to the KNUST Police Patrol Service on Wednesday, March 13, 2024. This notable gesture underscores the SRC's commitment to bolstering the operational efficiency of the Police Force, thereby fortifying their pivotal role in safeguarding the safety and security of students both within and beyond the confines of the University campus.
Giving a background to the donation, the Director of the Directorate of Student Affairs (DoSA), Professor Wilson Agyei Agyare, commended the SRC for their proactive initiative in facilitating the donation. He disclosed that the donation of the vehicle was a contribution from three different SRC Administrations comprising the Abuah-Regnald, the Frank-Deborah, and the current Yvonne-led administrations. "The Student Representative Council serves as a beacon of leadership and advocacy within our University community. We commend their dedication to serving the greater good and applaud their roles in spearheading this meaningful contribution to the Police Service,” he remarked.
Miss Yvonne Osei Adobea, the SRC President, in her remarks, stated that security for students off-campus has over the years been a challenge, hence, the decision by the SRC to spearhead this initiative to address the issue. "As representatives of the student body, we must actively contribute to the well-being of our community. We are honoured to have facilitated this donation, and we stand ready to support endeavours that promote safety, and security for students on and outside campus,” She added.
Miss Osei Adobea reaffirmed the SRC's commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance public and student safety.
During the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson acknowledged the support of the Police Service for providing security to the University. She underscored the University's unwavering commitment to community engagement and emphasised the importance of collaboration in addressing shared challenges. “We recognise the critical role played by the Police Service in preserving peace and security within our community. This donation symbolises our steadfast support for their invaluable contributions and our shared commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all.” She explained.
The SRC President accompanied by some SRC Executives, and the University Management officially handed over the vehicle to the Ghana Police Service.
Receiving the keys to the vehicle, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Frank Abrokwa, expressed gratitude on behalf of the Ghana Police Service, for the laudable initiative by the SRC. He mentioned that security is a shared responsibility and assured that the donated vehicle will be used to carry out duties ranging from routine patrols to emergencies to respond more efficiently to incidents and maintain public safety. "We are truly grateful for this generous gesture from the University's SRC, and we believe that this vehicle will greatly enhance our ability to serve and protect the entire University community,” he emphasised.
The vehicle was dedicated by the Protestant Chaplain, Rev. Dr. J. W Acheampong. The donated vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser single cabin, was equipped with the necessary features to aid police operations, including communication systems, Lighting and Siren, and storage space for equipment that would bolster their response capabilities and facilitate quicker interventions in the case of emergencies.
