The Board of Trustees for the S T. Nankani Scholarship Scheme has presented awards to 10 second year brilliant but needy students of KNUST. Giving the background of the scholarship, Dr. Ben Hagan Essel, the secretary to the board and a lecturer at KNUST said the scheme was set up eight years ago to take care of the needy students in the University from the capital left behind by Mr. Nankani irrespective of the regional background of the beneficiaries.
He said the scheme’s key objective was to further education, and encourage gender and regional diversity of Ghanaian students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
He further outlined the criteria for selection of the awardees. He noted that out of the 65 applications, 15 were shortlisted for interview after which 10 qualified for the award. Each beneficiary took home GH¢ 250 while the successful candidates from the school of Medical Sciences received GH¢ 300.
The beneficiaries of this year’s award include Yakubu Saaka Zakari, Adjei Akosua Konadu both offering Natural Resources Management, Obiri Jeremiah Yeboah, and Agyemang Emmanuel Kyere, Agriculture, Alasane Rahatu and Gawu Manesseh Kwaku, Computer Science, Bentum Philip, Geomatic Engineering, Alhassan Nashiru, Electrical Engineering, Addai Richard, Doctor of Optometry, and Belig Emmanuel, Pharmacy.
The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. W. O. Ellis, on behalf of the University expressed profound appreciation for the kind gesture of the board of trustees of the scholarship scheme. He also called on other benevolent organizations and individuals to come to the aid of needy students so they could achieve their academic goals.
The awardees were also grateful for the honors done them and prayed that God would replenish what had been given out so that the board could extend their arms to other fellow brilliant but needy students in the University.
