The Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Hostel, hitherto the SRC Hostel has been commissioned after construction works on the first phase of the project were completed.
In a keynote address by Professor W. O. Ellis, the Vice-Chancellor, the Hostel which was initially aimed to accommodate about 1000 students commenced in 1999, to provide extra accommodation for the increasing number of students. He said students were levied to provide seed money for the construction of the Hostel.
Professor Ellis acknowledged the contributions made by former Vice-Chancellors, past and present SRC Executives, Deans of Students, benefactors and governments. He attributed the successful completion of this phase of the project to teamwork and encouraged students and incoming SRC Executives to take a cue from the efforts of their predecessors.
His Majesty unveils the plaque on the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Hostel, Asantehene and Chancellor of KNUST appreciated the efforts by students, Vice-Chancellors, Deans and governments in the provision of infrastructure for education in the nation, especially KNUST.
His Majesty bemoaned the ever increasing level of embezzlement and mismanagement of funds by officials in all sectors of the national economy. He acknowledged that this acts are creeping into student leaderships and warned that projects like the Hostel would never be fulfilled through misappropriation of funds. The Chancellor called for comportment on the part of students in the University and tasked them to devote all their time and energy to studying.
Also present at the Commissioning were former Vice-Chancellors; Professor K. K. Adarkwa and Professor J. S. K. Ayim, under whose tenure of office the project commenced; Professor Peter Donkor, the Pro VC; Honourable Samuel Sarpong, KMA CEO; Nana Dwomoh Sarpong, President of Friends of Rivers and Water Bodies; and Principal Officers of the University and many more.
