The Member of Parliament (MP) for Oforikrom, Elizabeth Agyemang, has called on the Vice-Chancellor, Professor William Otoo Ellis. The Visit was to afford the MP the opportunity to familiarise with the Vice-Chancellor, and to congratulate him on his appointment as Vice-Chancellor and to discuss issues concerning the University. Professor Ellis briefed the MP on current happenings in the University.
He stated that KNUST was in the Oforikrom Constituency and in the Ashanti Region, and offered training to people from all over the world, both nationals and foreigners. However, much attention had not been paid to the University in terms of infrastructural development. He therefore challenged the Regional Coordinating Council, (RCC), the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, (KMA) and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Oforikrom to make themselves visible by embarking on projects to help teaching, research and community outreach programmes.
The VC said that there were so many avenues for the MP to provide assistance including the use of both public and private agencies. He said the University was in her constituency, and therefore appealed to her to support the University by offering scholarships and other forms of assistance to the University.
Professor Ellis further appealed to the MP to help lobby for assistance for the construction of the KNUST Teaching Hospital which is currently ongoing and being handled by CONSAR. He noted that the project was being funded solely by the University with its limited resources and for that matter it was sourcing for funds to help its timely completion.
Professor Otoo Ellis stated that due to the large number of students and the location of the University, it had become necessary to construct a fence wall to prevent encroachers and armed robbers from entering the campus, and appealed to the MP to assist in this regard.
For her part, Honourable Elizabeth Agyemang, pledged her support for KNUST and her entire Constituency for that matter. She said she was very proud that the number one University in Ghana was in her constituency. She praised KNUST for contributing immensely to the manpower needs of Ghana and Africa at large.
She announced plans of donating hospital equipment to the University Hospital in October. She assured the University and promised to offer the needed support in all areas, including those that have already been mentioned.
Honourable Elizabeth Agyemang is also a member of the Pan- African Parliament and a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Heath, Labour and Social Affairs.
With KNUST being within the Oforikrom Constituency, she has been a friend of the University and has contributed in diverse ways to the development of KNUST.
At the recent Golden Jubilee Celebration of the KNUST Senior High School, Honorable Elizabeth Agyemang donated computers and bags of cement valued at nine thousand (9000) Ghana cedis and seven thousand five hundred(7000) Ghana Cedis respectively.
A few years back she donated sporting equipment to all residential halls on campus. She also supported the University's team to participate in the Ghana University Students Association (GUSA) games.
