Mr. Lawrence Addo, a philanthropist and Managing Director of Relish Company Limited, Accra, has made a personal donation of Sixty thousand Ghana Cedis to support the education of brilliant and needy students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
Receiving the cheque on behalf of the University, Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso, thanked the donor for his generosity. The Vice-Chancellor stated that many Ghanaians are blessed but, some spend their resources in various ways that are not too beneficial to humanity and commended Mr. Addo for committing his personal resources to support students with financial challenges to help them through their education. Professor Obiri-Danso continued that though the University has received donations from many institutions, Mr. Addo’s personal donation to the University as an individual donor is impressive and the University recognises his effort and wish him well in his endeavours.
In response, Mr. Lawrence Addo, Managing Director of Relish Company Limited, stated that the donation of ¢60,000 Cedis, is from his personal resources and not proceeds from his business. According to Mr. Addo, he has been assisting brilliant but needy students over the years in many institutions through donations to various charity organisations and institutions of learning such as the National Partnership for Children’s Trust and the University of Ghana.
Giving a background to the donation, he noted that Mr. Johnny Osei Kofi, an alumnus and a former Faculty member, and Chief of Staff at the Presidency in the previous government, spoke to him about donating to needy students at KNUST. He continued that the ¢60,000 cedis donation is to be used to support brilliant but needy students across board to be distributed as the University deems fit.
He said it is the collective responsibility of all to ensure that there is egalitarianism in Ghana and not an elitist society where only children of the rich attain quality education. Mr. Larry Addo believes that when investments are made in tertiary education, beneficiaries move straight into the middle class and are positioned to help their family and others, for which reason he is motivated to be a philanthropist.
Mr. Larry Addo was accompanied by Mr. Johnny Osei Kofi, Mr. William Yeboah and Mr. Patrick Adu Boahen.
