As part of Veterinary Services and Rabies in West Africa’s (RIWA) vision to eradicate rabies in Ghana by 2030, the Ghana Veterinary Medical Students’ Association, KNUST, with support from the Ashanti Regional Veterinary Services and RIWA have conducted a free mass rabies vaccination at Ejura Sekyere Odumase. According to the team, Ejura is known to have more incidence rate of rabies, hence the move.
According to Mr. Kwaku Adusei Acheampong, the Chief Technical Officer of Ashanti Regional Veterinary Services, the vaccination is to help eliminate rabies and educate the public on its dangers to humans. He added that the Veterinary Services is ready to offer help and ensure that the vision is achieved.
The Municipal Director for Agriculture, Mr. Obrin Nyarko expressed gratitude to the team for selecting his district in Ashanti Region to carry out this project. He hoped that the students would continually come to their aid and promised to help to provide the vaccines needed in subsequent vaccination exercises.
The vaccination proved successful as students vaccinated 153 dogs.
