The Chancellor and Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has officially launched the 60th Anniversary Celebrations of the University during the last session of the 45th Congregation for the School of Graduate Studies. The theme for the Anniversary, "KNUST @ 60 - Achievements, Prospects, and Challenges", was also unveiled at the Great Hall.
As part of the anniversary which is slated for November 2011, the founding fathers, benefactors of KNUST as well as other distinguished personalities whose contributions in diverse ways have impacted immensely towards the growth and development of the University would be celebrated. Among some key personalities to be honoured are the late Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, first President of Ghana and also, the late Otumfuo Osei Agyemang Prempeh II, a former Asantehene.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor W.O. Ellis, in his comprehensive report, expressed satisfaction about that the current student population of the School of Graduate Studies which stands at 2,793. He further commended the School for the provision of quality tuition in twelve (12) post-graduate degree programmes ranging from Post-graduate Diploma to PhD level.
Professor Ellis announced the introduction of the "Consortium Concept" as an improvement over the existing "VC Special Initiative" aimed at improving staff development programme, and for staff to upgrade their academic standard to obtain terminal degrees in special selected programmes.
He urged the graduands to make maximum use of their acquired skills for the betterment of society, and the nation as a whole. "Let society feel the positive impact of your new skill and knowledge acquired from KNUST", he noted.
The Minister for Education, Honourable Betty Mould Idrisu, in an address, stressed Government's commitment to developmental projects in the public universities and other tertiary institutions in the country, and the KNUST in particular. She advised the graduands to be patriotic towards national development in the days ahead of them.
At the climax of a five-day ceremony, a total of 573 graduands were awarded post-graduate degrees in various fields of specialisation; namely Master of Arts, Master of Business Administration, Master of Science, Master of Philosophy, and Master of Fine Art. Of the total graduands, 36 graduated with PhD degrees.
