Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST, the number one University in Ghana, is to host the next Ghana University Students Assciation, GUSA Games in 2012. This was contained in a report on the just ended GUSA games signed by the Director of Sports, J. Y. Adu.
It is therefore expected that the University community would continue to assist in hosting the 22nd GUSA games successfully. The 21st GUSA Games was held from 4th to the 13th of June, 2010 at the University of Ghana campus.
Six Public Universities namely the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Education, Winneba, University for Development Studies and the University of Mines and Technology participated in the GUSA Games.
This year, KNUST was represented by two hundred and forty sportsmen and women contingent and the accompanying officials. The Sportsmen and women competed for laurels in athletics, soccer, hockey, handball, basketball, volley ball, tennis, badminton and table tennis.
In the men’s division KNUST drew and lost on penalties to University of Education, Winneba, but won all matches to become the eventual winner in the game. In basketball, KNUST was the winner in the women’s division and was the third in the men’s division. Again, KNUST in the men’s hockey division lost one match and won two to place second.
KNUST’s men placed third in the handball game. The women’s tennis team won gold in the doubles event and silver in the singles. In the Badminton game, KNUST had silver in mixed doubles and bronze in men’s singles and doubles. KNUST won five gold medals, three by the women and two by the men.
At the end of the game, KNUST placed fourth with eight gold, eleven silver and twelve bronze medals. The University of Ghana came third with ten gold, fifteen silver and twelve bronze medals, Whiles the University of Cape Coast was second with sixteen gold, twenty silver and twelve bronze medals. The first position was occupied by University of Education Winneba, with a total of twenty seven gold, fourteen silver and sixteen bronze medals.
With one silver and a bronze the University for Development Studies occupied the fifth position. The University of Mines and Technology came sixth with no medal.
