The President of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, Dr. Jacqueline Sharpe has paid a courtesy call on the Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. W. O. Ellis. This was part of her six-day temporary stay in the country. With her were officials of the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG), an affiliate organisation of the IPPF.
During their interaction with the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Dr Sharpe made it known that, the organisation has since its inception provided good quality services to young people on the issue of their sexual and reproductive health. The IPPF also advocates for choice and rights of people throughout the world.
The Pro-Vice Chancellor welcomed the delegation and commended them for their immense support to the University. He said, PPAG has been doing a lot as far as the development of the students is concerned, especially in counseling at the Dean of students’ office. He therefore entreated them to extend their scope of services by organizing programmes that would help students decide for themselves as far as expressing their sexual life is concerned.
The President of PPAG, Mrs. Fletcher, added that PPAG has been working closely with the University for sometime now to develop a lot of creative initiatives to address the needs of the students on campus. She assured students that they would continue to strengthen their commitment to them by offering them services that would improve their knowledge in policy formulation and decision making.
The Dean of students, Dr. Kofi Owusu Daaku added that, there were cases where students who visit his office had wished they hadn’t done what they had done after having been counseled. He therefore, implored the organisation to offer advice to the students who patronise their office, about the need for them to make informed choices as far as health issues are concerned.
The Director of University Health Services, Dr. Yaw Bioh was also of the view that, although the University healthcare has moved to the door steps of the students by providing them with a clinic, they cannot cover everything in terms of logistics. He thus urged the organisation to place the students’ health as a priority.
Present at the brief meeting were Dr. Frances Owusu Daaku, the immediate past president of PPAG, Dr. Joanna Nerquaye-Tetteh, the past chairperson, Mr. Okrah, Assistant Registrar, Vice Chancellor’s office and the SRC’s Women’s Commissioner.
