The Ghana Library Association (GLA) has held its 2010 Biennial Congress at the Great Hall of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology under the theme: "Open Access to Information". The National Congress attracted librarians from different institutions of higher learning including University of Ghana, KNUST, University of Cape Coast, University for Development Studies and University of Education, Winneba.
The President of the Ghana Library Association and Librarian for University of Education -Winneba, Mrs. Valentina Bannerman, described the theme as free and unrestricted access to information; adding that, without information, knowledge cannot be generated; and without knowledge innovation is impossible.
Mrs. Bannerman described "Information Poverty" as a serious obstacle to national development. She observed that, without knowledge the nation's quest for achieving the Millennium Development Goals would become a mirage. "Knowledge is critical to the growth of society", she noted.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor W.O. Ellis, underscored the need for librarians to create awareness for open access to information. "Technology, information generation and training are critical in terms of open access to information", he indicated. He used the occasion to commend Librarians for their impact in society, and he described them as "Special People".
In a speech read on his behalf, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Honourable Kofi Opoku-Manu, lauded the Association for choosing a sensitive theme, considering the place of information and communication technology in this day and age. This, he noted would also contribute towards the improvement of educational standards in the country. Honourable Opoku-Manu expressed Government's preparedness to enhance open access to information for public use.
The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Donkor, who chaired the ceremony in his closing remarks, moved for the advocacy of continued research and development among Librarians. He stressed the need for Librarians to observe specific targets so as to enhance staff performance and objectives. Professor Donkor assured that, the University would review its criteria for promoting KNUST Library staff.
Among the dignitaries present were: Mrs. Helena R. Asamoah-Hassan, University Librarian -KNUST; Dr. (Mrs.) Buhle Mbambo Thata, University Librarian - UNISA and Mrs. Araba Dawson Andoh, Africana Librarian, Ohio University, USA.
