Dr. Ruth Owusu-Antwi, a Lecturer at the Department of Behavioural Sciences, School of Medical Sciences, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi has been honoured with the 2025 Millennium Excellence Award for Women Advocacy.
The prestigious award recognises her unwavering commitment to advancing mental health care, empowering women, and shaping the future of medical education in Ghana.
Dr. Owusu-Antwi is widely acknowledged as a beacon of excellence and leadership in Ghana’s mental health landscape.

She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Biology and an MBChB in Medicine and Surgery from KNUST. Further advancing her academic and professional training, she earned a Master of Science Degree in Global Mental Health and Policy from her alma mater.
She is a Fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, specialising in Adult Psychiatry, a field in which she has made significant contributions through both clinical service and advocacy.
In addition to her teaching responsibilities at KNUST, Dr. Owusu-Antwi also serves as a Senior Specialist Psychiatrist and is the immediate past Head of the Psychiatry Directorate at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.
In this capacity, she has led innovative efforts to improve access to quality mental health care, overseeing both inpatient and outpatient services.
The Millennium Excellence Award for Women Advocacy celebrates individuals who drive transformative change for women across various sectors. Dr. Owusu-Antwi's recognition underscores her dedication to breaking the stigma around mental illness and advocating for inclusive mental health policies, especially those that uplift women and vulnerable populations.
