The Board of the College of Engineering (CoE) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has awarded two students in honour of two former Vice-Chancellors at the 6th College of Engineering Students and Industrial Partners Awards ceremony held yesterday. The awards in honour of the Late Professor F. O. Kwami and Professor Kwesi Andam, all former Deans from the CoE and Vice Chancellors of KNUST were instituted to acknowledge the Best Graduating Male and the Best Graduating Female Students of the College respectively.
At the ceremony held at the Kumapley Complex, Mr. Blessing Amoah of the Department of Petrochemical Engineering won the Prof. F.O. Kwami Award for Best Graduating Male Student and Miss. Effio-Akolli Constance of the Department of Civil Engineering won the Prof. K.A. Andam award for Best Female Graduating. The event saw about 250 students from fifteen (15) departments of the College being awarded under 3 categories. There were special recognitions for the College’s 35 Key Industrial and other partners.
In his welcome address, Provost of the CoE, Professor Mark Adom-Asamoah, said since its inception in 2012, the College Awards has been one of the ways adopted by the College to recognise the hard work of both students and industrial partners of the College. In the case of students, he noted, is to encourage them to work harder in their quest for academic excellence while the industrial partners are acknowledged for their enormous contribution and support to the College in the training of the students.
Professor Adom-Asamoah stated that the Industrial partners are key collaborators at improving the quality of students graduating from the College. They assist in ways such as offering vacation training to students, supporting conferences, donating additional equipment and accessories for teaching and learning and refurbishing some teaching facilities.
He noted that the Student’s Awards had categories for the Excellent Student, Best Student, Most Improved Student and Special Awards.
The Pro Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Professor Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson, expressed the University’s appreciation to all the industrial partners saying ‘It is you who make us maintain our position as the premier science and technology university in Ghana among others very possible’.
According to Professor Mrs. Dickson, partnerships are globally accepted and the University recognises the important role its partners play in producing high class engineers for the country and the world as at large.
