The Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II together with Management of the University has commissioned a number of projects on KNUST campus.
The Chancellor commissioned a five-storey complex for the Faculty of Social Sciences. This Complex has 25 lecture halls, 100 offices, 2 computer laboratories, 500-meter square library space and a 1,200 seating-capacity auditorium. The Chancellor also commissioned a classroom block at the School of Medical Sciences, KNUST; the facility has a 2,400 students seating capacity.
Other projects commissioned includes; KNUST Ghana Exim Bank and Agri Impact Youth Greenhouse Enterprise Project (YUGEP) located at the Mango road of the University. The ten 640 square-meter greenhouse project which is funded by Ghana Exim Bank is aimed at reducing graduate unemployment in the country. It will increase the production of vegetables such as tomatoes, green pepper, chili pepper, and cucumber for export.
The KNUST Islamic Center was also commissioned; the artistic place of worship is made up of prayer areas, a conference room, a library, offices and washrooms/ablution rooms. The facility was sponsored by Alhaji Salim Kalmoni, CEO of Japan Motors Ghana, and Alhaji Kanan Kalmoni.
His Royal Majesty again cut the tape for the refurbished KNUST Community Center. The Community Center has a 300-seating capacity auditorium, a kitchen, an outdoor theatre, three offices and washrooms. The refurbishment of this facility cost the University Gh₵ 2,000,000. He further unveiled a 10-bedroom refurbished Singh Guesthouse. The guesthouse has a meeting room, a reception, kitchenette with a changing room and an open grassed courtyard.
The KNUST Plastic Recycling Plant Unit costing Gh₵ 680,000 was also commissioned. The unit focuses on converting plastic waste into palettes to be reused in the production of bottles and other plastics for sale. This would reduce plastic waste accumulated within the University.
Additional projects commissioned include a six-cubicle washroom facility at the KNUST Security Barracks, a three-bedroom apartment for staff, a reconstructed 2.5 m × 2.5 m × 10 m double cell culvert bridge at the KNUST Botanical Gardens and the Road and Transport Engineering Program Building.
His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II lauded the collective efforts of the immediate Vice Chancellor, Professor Kwesi Obiri-Danso, Management of the University, constructors and architects for the completion of these projects. According to the Chancellor, the projects prove KNUST’s readiness to accommodate the expected huge numbers of the first batch of the Free Senior High School graduates for the 2020/2021 academic year. Funds for these projects were generated internally.
