A delegation from the University of Utah in the United States of America, (USA) has paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) at the Council Chamber.

The visit was to review the over 15 years’ partnership between the two Universities and how it could be improved to benefit both Universities in subsequent years.

Dr. Devon Wole, the head of the delegation said for the past years, their University has enjoyed a great partnership with the College of Health Sciences of the KNUST. He added that KNUST has always offered their students with safe and conducive atmosphere for learning as well as professionals who have tutored them in the area of medicine. He said partnering with KNUST has helped Utah immensely.

Mr. Spencer Kirk, a research fellow in micronutrient and a member of the delegation expressed interest in collaborating with KNUST for a programme in micronutrient- a nutritional supplement that helps pregnant women. He said he is currently in Ghana to undertake a four year study and would be happy to collaborate with the KNUST.

Professor W.O. Ellis, the Vice- Chancellor of KNUST welcomed the delegation and stated that over the years KNUST has enjoyed fruitful relationship with the University of Utah in terms of research and exchange programmes. He lauded the assistance Utah has been giving to the College of Health Sciences over the years and added that in terms of research; much work could be done to cover other areas. Speaking on Mr. Kirk Spencer’s proposal, the VC said it was a good one and assured him KNUST would offer him any assistance he would need to get the programme started.

The Heads of the Department of Social Work, Community Health, Anatomy, Medicine and Child Health took turns to brief the delegation from Utah on how their various Departments have gained from their partnership with them. Other Departments like Nursing, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy and Medical Laboratory are yet to partner with Utah.

Following the presentations by the various Heads of Department, the VC assured the delegation from Utah that KNUST has really benefitted from the partnership and hoped the partnership will be expanded to other areas. He was optimistic that Mr. Kirk Spencer will support the collaboration and make an informed decision.
