While the cap and gown remain traditional symbols of academic achievement, one piece of the graduation ensemble has become a canvas for personal expression: the graduation cap.
What used to be a plain, flat square hat is now a way for students to show off their creativity, personality, and achievements.
From funny sayings and inspirational quotes to designs that reflect their culture or field of study, these decorated caps have become a fun way to make graduation even more memorable.
Naa’s personal touch
For a student like Claudia Naa, choosing to add a personal touch to her cap made all the difference. Instead of placing her favourite scripture on her sash, she decided to inscribe it on her cap, making it even more special for the occasion.
Claudia’s cap bears the inspiring words:
“The smallest one will become a thousand, and the least one a mighty nation. I, the Lord, will hasten it in his time.”
She also chose a colour she loves, adding an extra layer of meaning to her design. It’s clear that Claudia’s graduation cap is more than just a symbol of her achievement, it’s a reflection of her faith, her personality, and the journey she has been on.

Jenny Agyapong’s resilience
Jenny Agyapong, the first in her nuclear family to graduate, shared a heartfelt reflection on her four-year journey. For her, graduation is not just a moment of academic achievement but a powerful celebration of resilience.
“I chose to do this because I don’t know the story of others, but mine hasn’t been easy at all,” she shared.
Jenny’s graduation cap featured a short but meaningful phrase:
“My story, His glory.”
This was a reflection of her personal journey and the faith that carried her through.

Jenny’s journey through school wasn’t always smooth. There were challenges, struggles, and moments of doubt. But in spite of it all, she pushed through. Now, she feels it’s time to celebrate herself.
“School has been tough, so I needed to celebrate it,” she said, recognizing the strength it took to reach this point.
Genevieve’s tribute to her parents
For Genevieve Adu, her graduation was as much about honouring her parents’ support and sacrifices as it was about celebrating her own accomplishments.
Her graduation cap carried a simple yet powerful message:
“Dad, this is for you. Mum, I made you proud.”
Genevieve was proud that her father’s passing didn’t diminish his impact on her life.

“Even though my daddy wasn’t here with me physically, his love and legacy continue to inspire me,” Genevieve said. “And I’m happy I made him proud, wherever he is.”
Materials used
When it comes to creating the perfect decorated graduation cap, vendors use a variety of materials to bring their designs to life. Many opt for fabric, glitter, rhinestones, and paint, while others incorporate elements like beads, feathers, or even personal photos. The choice of materials can make a big difference in both the cap’s aesthetic and its durability.
Gifty, who was once a student herself, saw an opportunity to help fellow graduates express themselves creatively and took up the task of selling personalized graduation caps.
“The price ranges from 200 GH to 270 GH,” she explained, highlighting that the materials used for the designs depend on the student’s budget. “The package includes a brand-new cap, letters, and flowers. However, the cap used isn't that of the university's," she said.
Some students also add embellishments such as ribbon borders, small charms, or sequins to make their designs stand out.
Each of these students used their decorated caps to tell a story of faith, family, resilience, and achievement. As they turned their tassels and moved forward, their caps represented not just academic achievement but also the love, sacrifices, and inspiration that fueled their success.
