The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Wellness Centre (KWC) has organised a three-day Health Screening and Aerobics Session for Staff of KNUST Basic School from Wednesday 27th to Friday 30th April 2022 at the Assembly Hall of the KNUST Basic School.
The first two days, Wednesday and Thursday were dedicated to the health screening and Friday was an aerobics session.
The Gym Overseer for KWC, Mr. Dominic Ofori, revealed that to function properly, every part of the body must be in a state of complete equilibrium. The human body, he stated, is just another part of the universe and is meant to be in perfect balance. ‘Humans need just so much exercise, no more and no less. We need just so much food of certain types, and we need just the right amount of sleep and relief from the tensions and stresses of life. If a person goes too far in either direction, be it for exercise, food or rest, then his or her entire physical and physiological system gets out of balance,’ he explained.
According to Mr. Ofori, aerobic or cardio exercise particularly strengthens the heart; strength or resistance training benefits the bones and muscles, whereas stretching or flexibility exercise improves and maintains a range of motion. He further stated that exercises keep the human body in good condition and therefore, encouraged the staff to exercise frequently.
The Gym Overseer added that exercising consistently helps prevent heart disease and muscle weakness, and controls and treats chronic conditions such as diabetes, arthritis and hypertension. It also increases bone and muscle strength, improves brain function and prevents forms of cancer.
Exercise can also improve brain function and sleep and boost mood and enhance your overall quality of life, he added.
He recommended that older adults engage in 150 minutes of moderate-intensive physical activity and 2 days of muscle-strengthening activity in a week or a combination of moderate-vigorous and intensive activity.
