The Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Ghana (WiSTEM-Gh), KNUST Chapter, has honoured the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST), Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, at a farewell reception celebrating her transformational leadership and enduring contribution to advancing women in academia and leadership.

Speaking at the event, the President of WiSTEM-Gh, Professor Ibok Oduro, described the reception as an opportunity to celebrate Professor Dickson's remarkable journey from a member of WiSTEM-Gh to becoming KNUST's first female Vice-Chancellor.
"This is not a send-off. It is a welcome home cocktail," she said. "We sent her from among us to become Vice-Chancellor. Now that she has completed that assignment, we are welcoming her back home. You are welcome back to WiSTEM."
Addressing members of WiSTEM-Gh, Professor Dickson encouraged women to pursue leadership with confidence, embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and remain steadfast in their pursuit of excellence as they continue to break barriers across academia and society.

Reflecting on her tenure, she attributed the University's achievements to teamwork, God's grace and an inclusive leadership approach that recognised the contributions of every member of the University community. She said effective leadership is rooted in trust, humility and empowering others rather than working in isolation.
"As a leader, you need the people around you. There is no way you can do it all by yourself. You create the needed environment to ensure everyone is able to contribute meaningfully," she said.
Professor Dickson also urged participants to develop personal visions and missions to guide their careers and life aspirations, while refusing to let self-doubt define their future.
"Every one of you is an institution. Just as KNUST has a vision and mission, you must have your own vision, your mission, and the values that will guide your journey," she advised.

She further called on women to remain resilient in the face of life's inevitable challenges, stressing that perseverance and courage are essential qualities for success.
"Keep going. Whether you like it or not, challenges will come. But continue to ask the right questions, seek help when you need it, and never stop moving forward."
The farewell reception also gave female staff the opportunity to celebrate Professor Dickson's historic tenure as KNUST's first female Vice-Chancellor and reflect on the impact of her leadership.
Participants described her as an inspiring, approachable and transformational leader whose administration expanded opportunities for women across the University while fostering a culture of mentorship, compassion and inclusion.
Several attendees shared personal experiences of Professor Dickson's mentorship and accessibility, recounting how her guidance, empathy and unwavering support inspired many women to pursue leadership roles and strive for excellence in their careers.
