The University Security Services has organised a Security Supervisor’s Course for selected Senior Supervising Officers from 13th to 18th June, 2022.
Participants were taken through Duties and Qualities of Security Supervisors; Security Officer and the Law; Security Report Writing; Leadership Skills for Security Officers; Team Building and Teamwork; Traffic Management Control; and Fundamental Human Rights. Trainees were also taken through drill and physical training lessons, emotional intelligence, fire prevention at the workplace and fire fighting techniques, prevention of non-communicable diseases, arrest, investigations, and prosecution of suspects.
Opening the workshop, the Head of University Security Services, Lt. Col. Richard Cobba-Eshun (Rtd) stated that contemporary security issues are becoming complex and difficult to handle and as such, they need professionally trained officers to be able to tackle emerging security issues. He stressed the need for professionalism which is a combination of training and good ethical conduct, therefore the need to organise timely workshops to equip the security officers.
The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ellis Owusu-Dabo said that the ramifications of the current dispensation in which we live make it imperative to ensure continuous training towards attaining utmost professionalism and integrity in achieving their mandate as Security Personnel of KNUST.
He stated that the current generation is bedevilled with security challenges ranging from the use of sophisticated gadgets, which the security services have to catch up with, hence, the need for the course. He also urged them to be abreast with security and governance toward professionalism
In a related development, the Senior Supervising Officers, on 18th June, embarked on a day’s fun-trip to the Central Region to tour prominent tourist attractions in the country such as the Cape Coast Castle and Kakum National Park.
Speaking on the trip, Lt. Col. Cobba-Eshun (Rtd), emphasised the need of taking breaks from the fast-paced, high-pressure security environment that the KNUST Security Services operate in. He compared the brain to a muscle, noting that both exercise and rest are necessary for optimal performance of the brain which makes the trip a timely one.
Participants in the training also shared their delight with the Head of the Security Services, thanking him for being considerate and acknowledging the necessity of such an enjoyable trip and the advantages it would provide. They were all in agreement that the break was needed.
