As part of activities marking this year’s Women’s Inclusion Week Celebration, Tek Co-operative Credit Union has donated assorted items to the maternity ward of the University Health Services at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST).
The gesture forms part of the union’s broader commitment to promoting women’s empowerment through financial inclusion and sustainable development.

Speaking during the presentation, the General Manager of Tek Co-operative Credit Union, Mrs. Mercy Opare Boakye, said the celebration seeks to encourage women to attain financial independence and actively pursue leadership opportunities within credit unions and other institutions.
She stressed that prudent financial management remains a key pillar in empowering women and improving their socio-economic well-being.
“To be empowered, we need to manage our finances well. Financial mismanagement continues to be a challenge, and that is why the Ghana Co-operative Credit Unions Association is intentionally working to support women to manage their finances better,” she stated.
Mrs. Boakye further encouraged women to join credit unions and take advantage of the financial support systems, training opportunities and leadership pathways available within the co-operative movement.
According to her, women remain underrepresented in leadership positions across many credit unions, making it necessary to deliberately equip and encourage them to take up such roles.
“We have realised that women in leadership positions are still very few. We want more women to rise to these positions, but before that, they must be empowered financially and given the confidence to avail themselves of such opportunities,” she added.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the University Health Services, the Matron of the facility, Mrs. Diana Appiah, expressed appreciation to the union for the gesture and support for mothers at the hospital.
“We are very grateful for remembering the women at the hospital and for donating these items to support us. It is a wonderful gesture for the mothers, and we assure you that the items will be put to good use,” she said.
She also appealed to the union to sustain its support for the hospital and women in need within the community.
Mrs. Boakye thanked the hospital management and staff for the warm reception, noting that the appreciation shown would inspire the union to continue supporting the facility through future initiatives.
