The Student Representative Council (SRC) of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) together with the University Management has donated a refurbished Hardbody pickup truck to the KNUST District Police Command. The donation, which was made on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, was intended to assist the University in fulfilling its mandate to provide good security systems for students living on and off campus.
The KNUST SRC President, Michael Abuah, disclosing the intent of the donation, mentioned that the SRC has been aware of the increasing number of students living off-campus and the many complaints on theft and other security issues from students. Therefore, the SRC in consultation with Management decided to allocate a portion of the SRC funds to refurbish the vehicle which had been acquired by Management.
This, he explained, is the SRC’s way of contributing to the safety of students on and off campus. He additionally thanked the Dean of Student, Professor Wilson Agyei Agyare, who was present, during the presentation and the University management for always being supportive and for making the security of students on campus and off-campus a priority.
ACP Kofi Buah, Divisional Police Commander for Manhyia Division, who accepted the donation on behalf of the KNUST Police Command, expressed his excitement and thanked the University Management and the SRC for prioritizing students’ safety and for making such a generous donation to the Command.
“To say we are grateful would be an understatement. We are so grateful. This is not the first time you have done something like this for us. We have had the opportunity to receive a refurbished Land Cruiser which is doing wonderfully well. We believe that this vehicle is also going to help us with our patrols, especially off-campus hostels and areas around the University,” he said.
ACP Buah also indicated his elation that KNUST, being an institution of higher learning, understands that the security of students is a shared duty, and that KNUST acknowledges the role of the Police. He further promised that the Police Unit is going to use the vehicle for its intended purpose which is to protect the life and property of the University community and its surrounding communities.
