The Sports Directorate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, has presented trophies won at the 2nd Minor Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games and the 28th Inter-University Cross Country Competition to the Directorate of Student Affairs.
The competitions were hosted by the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in Somanya.
A delegation of staff and student-athletes visited the Directorate to brief management on KNUST’s performance at the games and formally present the trophies won.
Chief Sports Coach Mr. Emmanuel Abban said Team KNUST competed against athletes from 15 other public universities, continuing the institution’s tradition of strong performances at inter-university competitions.
He said KNUST competed in nine disciplines and won six events, including chess in both the men’s and women’s categories, scrabble in both categories, men’s tug of war, and the newly introduced 2.5-kilometre cross-country mixed relay. He also recalled the University’s history of overall championship wins in previous editions of the competition.
“This is why we are here to present the trophies to let you know what we have done,” Mr. Abban said.
He thanked University Management and the Directorate of Student Affairs for the support provided before and during the competition and appealed for continued institutional backing, particularly in addressing accommodation challenges faced by some student-athletes.
Receiving the delegation on behalf of University Management, the Director of Student Affairs, Professor Marian Asantewah Nkansah, congratulated the student-athletes and their trainers, describing the achievements as a collective success.
“When students do well, the teachers and trainers must also be praised, because without their guidance, these natural talents would not have been nurtured,” she said.
The Directorate reaffirmed its commitment to continued collaboration with the Sports Directorate and encouraged the teams to build on their success as they prepare for future national and international competitions.
“Our office remains open to continued collaboration so that these successes can be sustained and even surpassed,” she said.
