BSc Automobile Engineering students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering have designed and fabricated an electric bicycle targeted at last-mile delivery, promising to reduce operational costs by 90% compared to traditional fuel-powered vehicles while significantly curbing greenhouse gas emissions.
Supervised by Dr. Godwin Ayetor, the project aims to revolutionize the final leg of the distribution process, delivering online orders directly to customers' doorsteps. By providing a clean, low-cost alternative to fuel-powered vans, cars, and motorcycles, the innovation targets both environmental impact and affordable logistics.
The development process began with initial paper sketches, followed by 3D modeling in SolidWorks to simulate structural loads and ensure durability. After successfully passing all stress and load tests in simulation, the team fabricated the functional prototype.
"If this bicycle is adopted into the transport system, it would reduce the emissions released into the atmosphere and lower delivery costs," the student team noted, adding that cheap operational costs will directly translate to lower fees for consumers.
The engineering project team includes Andres Kofi Asemah, Richard Yaw Amemasor, Emmanuel Oppong, Theophilus Nartey, Benneh Joshua Osei, Bentil Nkrumah, Desmond Dexter Duncan, Rockson Gyebi, and Godbless Chanuo Domonche.
