An alumnus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST), Dr. Joseph Bonney, has been elected to the Board of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine (IFEM).
Dr. Bonney was elected during the International Conference on Emergency Medicine (ICEM 2026) held in Hamburg, Germany. His election places him among global leaders responsible for advancing emergency medicine practice, education, research and policy across member countries.
In a further recognition of his contributions to the field, Dr. Bonney was also inducted as a Fellow of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine (FIFEM), one of the federation's highest honours bestowed on emergency medicine professionals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to the specialty.
The distinction recognizes his remarkable contributions to emergency medicine, research, education and health systems strengthening across Ghana and the wider African region.
A medical doctor, public health specialist and emergency medicine physician, Dr. Bonney has played a pivotal role in the development of emergency medicine in Ghana and across Africa. As President of the African Federation for Emergency Medicine (AFEM), he has championed efforts to strengthen emergency care systems, build professional capacity, promote research and foster collaboration among emergency medicine practitioners across the continent.
His election to the IFEM Board is expected to provide a stronger voice for Africa in global emergency medicine discussions and contribute to ongoing efforts to improve emergency care delivery in low- and middle-income countries.
