The Millicom Ghana Limited, the operators of Tigo Telecommunication in conjunction with the Electrical/Electronic Engineering Department has organised a one-day career fair for the students in KNUST. The programme provided the participants, especially the Postgraduates the advantage to apply for their new management trainee job opportunities slated for July, this year.
As part of the programme, a maiden annual sponsorship package for the Best Female and Overall Best Telecommunication Engineering student was launched. The award package included a cash donation of GH¢1,000.00, a plaque with the inscription of the award category on it and a possible National Service placement at Tigo for each of the awardees. The awardees were Michael Attakora and Jennifer Botah both from Telecommunication Engineering department.
Dr. P. Y. Okyere, the Dean of the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, welcoming the participants, said that the Telecommunication programme is endowed with brilliant and resourceful students, who, when motivated, could go higher places in the development of the country in the area of Information Communication Technology. He thanked the initiators, Millicom Ghana Limited for instituting such an award to motivate the students.
Rev. Dr. J. K. Oppong, the chairman for the occasion added that, what transpired at the fair was very much appreciated and prayed that in the future, Tigo would continue to support the University especially in the areas of research works so that the developmental agenda of the nation could be met.
In an interview with the head of the recruiting team, Mr. Kwadwo Oduro said that, what motivated them to embark on such an initiative was that, about 75% of the Tigo workforce are Alumni of the University, and that, the company has benefitted tremendously from KNUST. He said, if there were any assistance to give, KNUST was the right place to come. He pledged that, as a company, they would do their best to collaborate with the department closely in training Electrical Engineers by blending the academic skills with the field experience.
