The Institute of Distance Learning (IDL) of KNUST would from the 2011/ 2012 academic year introduce two new programmes namely, Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Information Technology and Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) in Health Informatics. Currently, the Institute runs eleven (11) undergraduate, and five (5) post-graduate programmes concurrently in eight Regions of the country.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor W.O. Ellis, made this known in his report during the 7th session of the 45th Congregation for the last batch of graduands of the College of Engineering, and those of IDL at the Great Hall. He was confident that the IDL is poised to extend its centres to all the ten Regions of Ghana from the beginning of the 2011/ 2012 academic year. He praised the Institute for its rapid growth and expansion especially, for the current student population of 5,035.
Professor Ellis also commended the College of Engineering for sustaining collaborations with international institutions, industrial bodies, and research organisations, among others. He stated that the objective of the College is to produce well-trained engineers for the job markets.
The motivational speaker for the occasion was Ing. Charles Darko who is an alumnus of KNUST and currently, the Chief Executive Officer of GRIDCO. Ing. Darko congratulated the graduands for the successful completion of their programmes. He encouraged them to demonstrate a high sense of discipline, open mindedness, courage, diligence, punctuality, and integrity in the discharge of their professional duties.
In a valedictory speech, the overall best graduand of the College of Engineering, Mr. Ribeiro Nii Offei, expressed profound gratitude to the Almighty God, management of the University, parents, and guardians for their unflinching support during their studies. He commended his colleagues on their determination and efforts for such academic achievements. He urged them to take bold decision and strive for higher heights in their various endeavours.
Miss Eunice Arthur, the best female student of the College together with Mr. Rebeiro Nii Offei, both of who had First Class Honours, received prizes from Vodafone Ghana Limited for academic excellence.
A total of 321 graduands for Departments of Computer, Electrical, Mechanical, and Agricultural Engineering in the College of Engineering were awarded Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degrees with the following breakdown: 50 First Class; 143 Second Class (Upper Division); 96 Second Class (Lower Division); and 32 had Pass. Fifty six (56) graduands of the IDL were also awarded B.Sc. degrees.
