The Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Prof. William Otoo Ellis, on Monday 15th of November 2010, met all the Senior Members of the College of Science. The purpose of the meeting was to share his vision with the College and to address issues of concern to members. Topics he touched on included, Research and Postgraduate Training. He emphasised the importance of research as a major source of funds to the University and advised the departments to ensure that qualified research scientists are employed in the Research Centres for the purpose of efficiency and effectiveness. He further underscored the need to promote Postgraduate Studies and introduce more Demand Driven Programmes.
Other priority areas identified by the Vice-Chancellor included Continuous Systematic In-service Programmes for all categories of staff, the implementation of a Performance Based Appraisal System and developing two City Campuses, one in Kumasi and the other in Accra.
The Vice-Chancellor hammered on KNUST's social responsibility to the communities, especially the deprived areas. He urged Senior Members in the College to try and offer free consultancy services periodically to deprived areas in order to help solve problems in those areas. He further indicated his intention to complete all ongoing projects and initiate new ones. These included a Graduate School Building, ICT Building, the City Campus Block, a Teaching Hospital Project and other potential projects and refurbishments.
He concluded by urging all Senior Members to aspire to make KNUST a first class university in Africa and beyond by seeking group rather than self interest. "As a Vice-Chancellor, I require trust, excellence, creativity and innovativeness from all teams" he noted.
