To enhance the quality of news on the KNUST E-learning Centre's website, Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, the Deputy Registrar of the University Relations Office, has urged the Centre’s reporters to prioritise clarity and ethics in their writing. He made this call at the second training session for the news reporters on Tuesday, 18th April 2023.
Speaking on the topic “Ethics and Responsibilities of News Reporters,” Dr. Bekoe addressed the crucial role of reliable and credible information in promoting the E-learning Centre. He noted that accuracy, fairness, and integrity are essential components of any reputable news outlet. As such, news reporters must be present at all events to gain first-hand information that is accurate and reliable before it is disseminated to members of the University community as well as other stakeholders.
Dr. Bekoe stressed the importance of fact-checking and the use of proper transitions in writing. He also advised against the use of undercover or surreptitious methods of gathering information, conflicts of interest, and the dissemination of false information. According to him, ethical reporting entails fairness and accuracy.
He used the opportunity to educate them on the various types of defamatory statements, such as libel and slander, and urged the reporters to be professional in their news writing to avoid being accused of defamation. “Once you are a reporter, you must follow the tenets of professional reportage,” he affirmed.
During the session, participants had the opportunity to ask questions to gain more understanding of the topic.
