A gruelling battle with Quantum Chemistry in her third year became the turning point that propelled Sandra Asante, a BSc Chemistry student, to graduate as the best female student from the College of Science with a Cumulative Weighted Average (C.W.A) of 82.60.
Sandra recalls that the transition from classical chemistry to quantum concepts, while beginning her research work tested her resolve more than any other academic experience.
“It was a major shift from classical chemistry, and it was also the time I started research. I realised I couldn’t do it alone. It was a difficult transition, and when I asked for help, some people thought I already knew. That experience taught me the importance of seeking guidance and perseverance,” she said.
She attributes her success to discipline, careful planning and personal sacrifice.
“I had to skip certain events, celebrations and parties to prioritise academics. Campus life is full of opportunities to go out, but I had to prioritise academics. Consistency and sticking to my schedule were key.”
The mental strain of academic pressure, she said, was intense, but the support of mentors, friends and family kept her grounded.
“There were times when I broke down because I couldn’t understand something in class. But I was fortunate to have amazing support from my parents, mentors and friends. Their encouragement kept me going when I felt overwhelmed.”
Sandra also praised her lecturers in the Department of Chemistry for shaping her thinking beyond the confines of the classroom.
“They don’t just teach chemistry. They share their life experiences, their approach to challenges and how they think critically. That has helped me think about how I want to approach life and my future.”
To young women aspiring to excel in science, she offers advice grounded in discipline and self-awareness.
“Not every study method will work for you, so find what suits you best and optimise it,” she said. “Prepare with great intensity so when things go in your favour, you strike hard, and when they don’t, you draw from your deepest reservoir.”
